Threshing beaten rice in Okhal

By cpoudelPosted on October 31, 2019October 12, 2020

People are busy threshing rice in the okhal to make chiura (beaten rice), the staple food of the Newars. During festival time, a temporary wooden fireplace is set up in the yard and rice paddy is soaked in water and roasted in a clay pot over a fire before being threshed. Neighbours help out by taking turns in the threshing.
