Holi

Every year during the month of Fagun, the arrival of spring is celebrated with the festival of Fagu. A Newari Fagu song sung during the festival with full musical accompaniment goes: ‘Why are you angry in this festival of colours, pretty one? I’ll add more beauty to your angry face with colour.’ During Fagu, boys would sing and dance in the streets and throw packets of colour at girls looking down from their windows. They would rub colour on the faces and hair of girls in the streets. The girls in the streets would try to run away from the boys while the ones in the windows would throw colour at the boys. At the same time, men and women would go about with musical instruments singing, dancing and feasting in various places around town.
